Prayer

Good Shepherd,

The voice of a shepherd is distinctive to his sheep, for they know his voice and will come when called. Help us to recognize your voice, our Shepherd, more clearly in our lives, through prayer, scripture, and quiet moments spent in your presence. When you call, may we hear and respond with open hearts, trusting that following you brings purpose and peace. Thank you for continually guiding us. Amen.

Prayer

Gracious God,

Each day we come to work with grateful hearts, thankful for the opportunity to help others on their journey to better health. You call us to live for others, following the model of Jesus, and in answering that call, we take part in bringing forth your dream for the world—your reign of love and compassion. Help us to make wise and selfless decisions, placing the needs of others before our own, knowing that in doing so, we are truly living. In your holy name, we pray. Amen.

Reflection “Jesus promised his disciples three things: that they would be completely fearless, absurdly happy, and in constant trouble.” –William Barclay Prayer Empowering God, As we recommit to extending the ministry of Jesus

Prayer

Empowering God,

As we recommit to extending the ministry of Jesus today, we can expect that our mission will challenge those who want to preserve the status quo, guarding the interests of the powerful and the overprivileged. Empower us by your Spirit to go on all the same, serving those in need and bringing good help to the vulnerable. Make us fearless advocates of your healing liberation, especially for those who are marginalized, and may we be happy and joyful in the process, knowing it’s the right thing to do. Amen.

Reflection Peter approached Jesus and asked him, ‘Lord, if my brother sins against me, how often must I forgive him? As many as seven times?’ Jesus answered, ‘I say to you, not seven times but seventy-seven times.’” –Matthew 18:21-22

Forgiving God,

As a ministry together and as people of conscience, help us to keep practicing forgiveness, even when it feels hard or undeserved. Keep us mindful of the way your grace towards us calls us to extend grace to others, again and again. Even when the wounds may be deep and the healing is slow, help us to build a culture of mercy where our service in healthcare advances a mission that truly promotes the well-being of entire communities, as we surmount divisions and pursue the common good together. Inspired by your hope for the world, we pray. Amen.

Prayer

Loving God,

We are often tempted to think we are superhuman and can just keep going. Yet sooner or later the illusion comes down and we’re forced to step back. Before exhaustion takes us out of the action, help us get better at practicing genuine self-care, stewarding the gifts and calling you’ve given out of our sense of gratitude and responsibility to you. For the sake of all those we serve—our families and our patients and so many others—encourage us to take better care of ourselves. Amen.

Prayer

God of vision,

As individuals and as a ministry, we need your vision so we can stay focused on the purpose to which you have called us. There is so much good we could do that we may get distracted from the one thing needful, given the time and resources you’ve provided for today. Give us focus and resilience so that “success” for us will always be the outcome of clear-headed discernment about the priorities we ultimately must pursue, to be true to ourselves and who you’ve called us to be. Amen.

Prayer

Empowering God,

We pray today for colleagues who may be struggling to stay motivated in the mission we share together. Ignite in them, as within all of us, a deep passion for the work we share as a ministry committed to healing. May we be willing to stay fully invested, so our hearts align with the purpose you’ve given us and empowered us to do in your name. Encourage each of us to bring our unique skills and gifts freely to the tasks ahead, knowing that through our contributions, your good work is made stronger among us. For patients and families and our wider community. Amen.
