Adoption of Resolution of Independence
Reflection
“Let us readopt the Declaration of Independence, and with it the practices and policy which harmonize with it. Let North and South – let all Americans – let all lovers of liberty everywhere join in the great good work. If we do this, we shall not only have saved the Union, but we shall have so saved it as to make and keep it forever worthy of the saving.” ~ Abraham Lincoln
Prayer
God of freedom and dignity,
On this day in 1776, the representatives of the Continental Congress adopted a resolution declaring independence from Great Britain, a call to freedom grounded in the basic rights of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. Stir within us the flame of solidarity with all our sisters and brothers that we might affirm the life and dignity of all people. May we commit ourselves to living faithfully the call to justice embedded in our nation’s founding document, becoming a country of true liberty and justice for all. We pray in the name of the God who is the source of our being and freedom. Amen.
