We may often hear someone say, “your presence is blessing to others”, referring to what we do or say that brings God’s comfort and peace to those around us. The definition of the word blessing is to be in God’s favor and protection. When we extend God’s blessing to others, we allow others to be touched by God’s love, compassion, favor and protection.
In the book of Genesis, God speaks to Abraham and says “I will make of you a great nation, and I will bless you; I will make your name great, so that you will be a blessing”(Genesis 12:2, USCCB). God blessed Abraham and in turn wanted Abraham to be a blessing to others. In the same way, God blesses each of us and then wants us to be a blessing to others. The blessing of God is a gift, but not a gift that is to be kept to oneself, but rather shared with others for the good of all. When we share blessings with others, through prayer, patience, presence, and love, we are extending the compassionate ministry of Jesus with those we serve.
