Reflection “You shall love the Lord, your God, with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind. This is the greatest and the first commandment. The second is like it: You shall love your neighbor as yourself.

Prayer

Love in action,

You refuse to give us an easy way out of love’s true demands. You remind us that, in your eyes, love is never an abstract feeling or vague sentiment, and that this is nowhere important than in the way we show our love for you. If we say we love you, you tell us, we will show it in the way we treat all your children. Help us live into this calling more and more: to love you better by loving our neighbors. With all our heart, soul, and mind, we pray. Amen.

Prayer

God of tomorrow,

You give your people hope by giving them vision. Through your holy Word and in the example of your son, Jesus, you have blessed us with a vision of life worth living, together. Help us to make choices this day that will bring your vision more and more into reality, for our own sake and for the sake of our neighbors in need. Beyond mere wishful thinking, empower us to execute the vision of the gospel with faith, hope, and love, and thereby rejoice in a world transformed. Amen.

Prayer

Healer divine,

We will never find resolve to our questions of “why,” underneath the suffering and pain we experience and witness in the lives of others. Yet you have given us every reason to believe that you are with us in every circumstance and can lead us into new depths of healing, deeper than how things look on the surface. Give us hope for such healing today, for ourselves as much as for those we have the privilege of serving. Our patients and families and our wider communities. Help us accompany them as you have sent us to do, attending especially to the spiritual health of all. Amen.

Prayer

All in all,

Your ways are higher than our ways! And it is a sign of your greatness that you seem to be closest in the humblest of places. Help us to become more aware of your presence in the simple things we take for granted each day. The certainty of the rising sun; the blessing of vivid and natural colors; the kindness that strangers show to each other; or even the faithful love of our pets. In these and so many other ways, may we perceive and receive your goodness is like a gift. Amen.

Prayer

Gentle God,

Help us never to underestimate the significance of a smile. May we build a culture in which we are eager to share a sincere smile and a kind word with those in need. No matter who they are or what has brought us together, help us practice your kindness towards all those you send our way. When we encounter especially the crestfallen, the hurting and sorrowful, may we serve them as you would, with love, joy, and compassion. Amen.

Prayer

God in the chaos,

Your ministry among us revealed the strength and boldness of divine compassion. You entered our mess and disorder and showed us that, even there, your peace can rule in our hearts. Help us live in the hope that such an example brings, and to be a source of stability for others in their time of need. When chaos and disorder threaten us and our neighbors, may we be a community of support for each other, anchored in your presence among us through it all. Amen.

Prayer

Loving God,

In accord with the mission to which you have called us, we believe that all people are deserving of the wholeness that comes from conscientious attention to every facet of our humanity: mind, body, and spirit. During Spiritual Care Week, we give thanks for those who have dedicated themselves to serving the spiritual health of others. And we ask you to bless them with the renewal of their own spirits, that they may be equipped and empowered to do good for others today and each day. Amen.
