Almighty and eternal God,

We live in a time of division and partisan rancor. Yet, as St. Paul wrote, we are all one. Help us to be open to the perceptions and experiences of others that we might strengthen the bonds of our common humanity, even among those with whom we disagree. May our willingness to see the world through the eyes of another help us to understand one another more deeply and unite us as a human family. Amen.

A dimension of the greatest commandment is to love God with all our mind. We thank you today for the gift of our minds and for the opportunity to use our reason to pursue truth and justice. Stir within us an appreciation of this gift you freely bestow upon us and inspire us to use it to strengthen the bonds of community. May the good and proper use of our minds sustain us in right relations with each other and help us to recognize your presence in us all. We make this prayer in your name. Amen.

God of relaxation and fun,

We are often reminded to rest so that we will be more productive. We are taught to relax so that we can do our jobs better or tackle the next task with renewed vigor. Though in some sense true, rest and relaxation are goods in and of themselves and not because they make us better workers. Move us to enjoy time for rest not for any purpose other than the joy of rest and relaxation. Help us create time to rest in your presence and in the presence of family and friends, pursuing activities we enjoy and people we cherish. Amen.

We recognize that being human is both a reality and an ongoing task. Though created in God’s image and likeness, we can act in ways inconsistent with the gift God has given us. Too often we are confronted with images, stories, and experiences of our inhumanity towards each another.
