World Leprosy Day
Reflection
“We cannot forget these brothers and sisters of ours. We must not ignore this disease, which unfortunately still afflicts many people, especially in the most disadvantaged social contexts. On the contrary . . . let us allow ourselves to be challenged and to be asked: ‘Will we bend down to touch and heal the wounds of others?’” –Pope Francis
Prayer
God of those most vulnerable,
Today we recognize the ongoing impact of leprosy and other diseases that for much of our history have caused untold suffering. Not just physical suffering, but the emotional and relational suffering that attends these illnesses, as they become laden with stigma and prejudice. As those who have partnered on mission with you, help us to recommit ourselves each day, to touch the wounds of those ostracized by illness and to serve all people as you served them, with compassion, love, and inclusion. Amen.
Call to Action
Recommit to showing special attention to the vulnerable people around me that others are prone to neglect. Be ready today to bend down, touch their wounds, and help them get up.
