Prayer

Almighty God,

Humbly you came to the earth you created and showed us the way of true greatness. You broke the supposed wisdom of the world with the wisdom of heaven, teaching us: “whoever wishes to be great among you will be your servant; whoever wishes to be first among you will be the slave of all.” What’s more, you perfectly modeled such servanthood in your life and your death, giving yourself up as a ransom for many. No greater love than this, God; and no one greater among us than one so ready to serve. Help us each day to serve as we can, in accord with our calling, upholding the good and the dignity of all. Amen.

Reflection “Constant kindness can accomplish much. As the sun makes ice melt, kindness causes misunderstanding, mistrust, and hostility to evaporate.” –Albert Schweitzer Prayer Gracious God, Every good and perfect gift comes from

Prayer

Gracious God,

Every good and perfect gift comes from you. Kindness! What a remarkable gift, and one we can so freely share with each and every one of your precious creatures. Open our hearts, Lord, so that we who have been shown such kindness may be faithful to show it to others. Let your kindness among us melt those hearts frozen by misunderstanding, mistrust, and hostility. Amen.

Prayer

God our Maker,

Embody your goodness through us, O Lord, embody your goodness. Inspirit our bodies—yes, these very bodies!—to serve in your stead, blessing the world with compassion. And now, for the hands that have worked till they’re weary—have mercy, and come, holy spirit. For the feet that have walked till they’re sore—have mercy, and come, holy spirit. Amen.

Reflection “Smiling is mouth yoga. We release the tension from our face as we smile. Others who run into us notice, even strangers, and are likely to smile back. It is a wonderful chain reaction that we can initiate, touching the joy i

Prayer

Joyous Creator,

You made us to smile, and this truly is gift. Would we even know who we are, without the smile of another? (Consider the smile of the mother… the infant’s locked gaze... being loved in that smile…) The smile of another brings us out of these shells and we can feel ourselves touched, almost in spite of ourselves.

In myriad ways you smile on us, too, Lord. And it’s something to ponder and praise, that the greatest hilarity shared here on earth must pale in comparison to the rejoicing that’s shared wherever you are, in the fullness of your glorious life. Are you not the source of all joy? The one in whom our very own light and life are found? Are you not the one who turns mourning into dancing? May it be so, Happy God, that our faces will beam and your glory redound. Amen.

Reflection “Only in God is my soul at rest;      from him comes my salvation. He only is my rock and my salvation,      my stronghold; I shall not be disturbed at all.” —Psalm 62:1-2 Prayer Unchangin

Prayer

Unchanging God,

The psalmist inspires. Yet if we are honest, there is, in fact, much that disturbs us. Turbulence, uncertainty, dangers and threats. Strengthen our faith and lead us, Good Shepherd; lead our weary souls to find rest in you alone, and may we make every effort to enter therein.

Reflection “To pray is to dream in league with God, to envision His holy visions.” –Rabbi Abraham Joshua Heschel Prayer Almighty God, It is both awesome and awful to realize how much you trust us. You actually want us, invite us,

Prayer

Almighty God,

It is both awesome and awful to realize how much you trust us. You actually want us, invite us, and empower us to make your dreams for the world a reality. Oh dear God, teach us to pray! Beyond clever words and beyond our own schemes, may we desire above all to be filled with your visions, that our hearts and our minds may be ever conformed to your will. Only then may we all play our parts, that your will may be done on earth as it is in heaven. Amen.

Indigenous Peoples’ Day

Indigenous Peoples’ Day

Prayer

Creator Spirit,

Thanks to Standing Bear’s words, an immature nation opened its eyes and recognized the one human family refracted in the Native American. How shamefully slow we have been! Refusing to see your image in each other! Forgive us, God, for obdurate blindness, and the willful desire to seek comfort in sameness. May we marvel instead, that your image explodes in so many colors, grateful that creation’s diversity is truly a sign of your goodness. On this celebration of Indigenous Peoples’ Day, we remember and affirm once again our fundamental unity, as one human family. Amen.
